British Parking Awards 2018; What The Jury Said...

At this year's British Parking Awards the entries were assessed by a jury that comprised a mix of parking and transport professionals as well as representatives from organisations representing road users, such as the RAC foundation and the freight transport association.

The Judging Process

The British Parking Awards involved a series of assessments and discussions of entries as well as site visits when necessary. The car parks that had been short-listed in either the new build and refurbishment categories were visited by jury members. There were also reports on the sites from the British Parking Association's regional managers, who drew on either their visits in relation to the Safer Parking Scheme or made fresh visits where sites were new to them.

Jury comment:

The Victoria Leeds multi-storey car park is as striking as the upmarket mall it serves. But it is not only an attractive building, it is a facility that has been designed to provide shoppers with a high quality parking experience. It is a car park that should be on the ‘must see’ list of all parking professionals.

Jury comment:

Q-Park Deansgate is a brilliant example of how to create a modern building within a historic setting with care and consideration. This project is proof that car parks can make a positive contribution to both the commercial health of cities and the urban realm. In terms of layout and services, this car park builds on Q-Park’s pedigree for neat design, memorable branding and exemplary customer services.

Best Car Park Refurbishment

Potter, Church & Holmes Architects, Stanhope and Stripe Consulting: Ruskin Square, Croydon

Ruskin Square - Specialist Contractor USL StructureCare

Jury comment:

The Ruskin Square project is an example of how a car park can be reinvented rather than just refurbished. A strong design brief means that the renovated building feels like a brand new multi-storey, making a classic Brutalist structure one totally at home in the 21st Century.
